As there are various different interviews that can take place it can be difficult to know which techniques to use for each. One of the most difficult are telephone interviews, this is simply because there are no visual cues from the interviewer, you will need to be weary of this, not ramble on during the phone call and keep everything concise.

You will find that a lot of companies do telephone interviews before a face-to-face stage, as it can be a quick and easier alternative for a first stage, as you can still make an informed decision afterwards about how to proceed.

When arranging/confirming a telephone interview the most important thing you have to do is make sure you are 100% available to the time they suggest, this may seem obvious but you will be surprised how many people do not pick up the phone or are suddenly not available anymore on the time agreed! This doesn’t give a good impression to the interviewer. However, if you aren’t given a time frame for the interview, you should suggest when would be best for you, not only will this benefit you in order for you to prepare you will know when to expect the phone call, it also shows the interviewer that you use your own initiative, all these things can make a lasting impression when the interviewer is making a decision.

One of the benefits of having a telephone interview is that you can do plenty of research and keep all your notes out in front of you to refer back to. Although this is an advantage you need to make sure that you keep your notes brief, quick and easy to read, otherwise you will be reeling off your notes to the interviewer and you wont come across as natural.

As mentioned before, a major negative for phone interviews is you cant go off visual cues from the interviewer throughout the process, although this might not seem difficult and you will be aiming to treat the interview as any normal phone conversation, it can be difficult to do this as you will not have spoken to the interviewer before, and naturally you will be nervous. Due to these factors it is important to keep to calm, do not panic, as this will make you speak quicker. You should also try and keep your answers brief; when I say brief I don’t mean one-word answers, as this will make you sound very abrupt, still make sure you answer the questions to the best of your ability but try not to ramble on, you don’t want to be remembered as the person who didn’t stop talking throughout the interview.

You could be asked if you have any questions at the end of the interview, this is your chance to show your preparation and research, ask any questions that you feel are relevant at this stage.  Remember you haven’t been offered the job so don’t come across too keen and starting asking about salary expectations etc.

Once you have finished the interview, end the conversation on a positive note, thank them for the opportunity and tell them that you are looking forward to hearing from them soon.
